The music clip, now considerably degenerated in its television form, was once a sparkling and avant-garde genre. Two programs with over 30 masterpieces from some of the most innovative filmmakers in the world: Mark Romanek, Jonathan Glazer, Anton Corbijn and Stephanie Sednaoui have redefined the music video and left a lasting impression on popular culture with their unique styles.
In the course of his 25-year career, Anton Corbijn has become best known as the photographer of choice for Depeche Mode and U2. He also made a name for himself as video director for, among others, Nirvana, Metallica and, most recently, The Killers. Corbijn, the son of a minister, grew up on the tiny Dutch island Strijen and is famous for his fascinating album and book covers; his raw, grainy black-and-white photos have been exhibited worldwide. The subject of his first film, "Closer," is the tragic life story of Ian Curtis, lead singer of Joy Division.
Er kreiert eine Realität, die genau deshalb so real ist, weil sie über die Realität hinausschießt.
Mark Romanek became known for his clips for Janet & Michael Jackson ("Scream") and Johnny Cash ("Hurt"), but has also worked with the likes of Beck, David Bowie, Keith Richards, R.E.M., Lenny Kravitz and Madonna. The award-winning director is also represented at the New York Museum of Modern Art with two of his works: He creates a reality that is as real as it gets, because it shoots beyond reality. His feature film debut, "One Hour Photo" with Robin Williams, appeared last year.
A native of France and current resident of New York, Stphane Sednaoui started out working in the Paris fashion scene with Jean-Paul Gaultier, and later worked with William Klein. At the age of 22 he was already working as a professional photographer for numerous fashion magazines, influencing advertising, fashion photography and celebrity portraits with his unique style. His clip "Give it Away" for the Red Hot Chili Peppers landed him an MTV Music Award, and he has worked with Tricky, Mirwais, Massive Attack and Björk, to name a few.
Englishman Jonathan Glazer began his career as a busy tv-ad director (Levi*s, Stella Artois, VW and others) and began to shift toward music video in the nineties, working with groups like Massive Attack, Radiohead and Blur. Straight movements that seem to be in danger of interruption are his signature, stunningly demonstrated in "Rabbit in Your Headlights" for U.N.K.L.E. and "Karma Police" for Radiohead. Glazer made his feature film directing debut with "Sexy Beast," starring Ben Kingsley, and his psychodrama "Birth," with Nicole Kidman, gained considerable attention last year.
