Immaginale

The Immaginale, started eight years ago as an independent festival, has since found a home within interfilm as a special section dedicated to Italy.

Over the years, this little 'festival within a festival' has gone through many changes. Our goal, however, has remained identical throughout: to give an overview of Italian short films as well as the conditions under which they are produced.

In two programs with a total of 15 films we present Love and Other Special Offers using the example of vacuum cleaner salesmen, supermarkets, yachts and wardrobes. Under the header Memories, Labour & Social Affairs surreal games find their place alongside children, the outskirts of cities, and civil engagement.

A notable phenomenon of the past year is the comeback of the short film as a medium in Italy, possibly due to the increasing difficulty of financing full-length features. Next to accomplished short film directors such as Manuela Mancini (Ti racconto una storia) there are names of directors better known internationally for their full-length features such as Edoardo Winspeare (Il cammino) or Salvatore Mereu (Il mare). Interestingly, there seems to be a growing trend of actors directing shorts, for example Valerio Mastandrea (Trevirgolaottantasette), one of the most popular stars of contemporary Italian cinema.

As in past years, there will be an audience prize for the most popular movie, donated by the German-Italian Cultural Association lavori in corso, e.V.

The Immaginale is only possible through the support of a whole slew of friends and helpers. Our special thanks go to Maurizio Di Rienzo (delegate for short films of the Sindacato Nazionale Giornalisti Cinematografici), Alessio Massatani (Aip-Filmitalia) for infinite patience and constant availability, Carla Cattani (Aip-Filmitalia) for her tireless support, Silvia Cardini and Christine Aigner (lavori in corso e.V.) for believing again this year that Italian shorts are worthy of a prize, and Carsten Siebert for translations and suggestions.
