PRE 01 LEM - THE FINE ART OF DESIGNING NOISE

Every improvement in media technology makes an objective look at the resolution quality of detached techniques that much more possible. Particularly the perfected signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of digital signal processing and the quality of digital images sensitize us to disturbances and imperfections. The media-trained brain no longer perceives disturbances as an inconvenient signal-to-noise time lag, but identifies it as a cultural code.

PRE 02 LEM - THE FINE ART OF DESIGNING SILENCE

As the background noise (ambient noise) of digital media approaches the zero point, the creative possibilities of silence become available in hitherto unconceivable quality. This artistic silence is especially to be appreciated when compared to analogue media. The numeric representation of all digital media formats provides new approaches for both visual and acoustic levels.

How do we perceive silence? How does silence, visual and auditory, function in a film? What role does technology play in making silence something to be experienced?

LAB 01 / LAB 02 - KINOKABARET: KINOBERLINO

The film junkies from KinoBerlino and from all over the world rise to the challenge again: they will plan, shoot, cut and present short films within 48 hours at this year's festival.

The theme will be announced at the festival opening. For the 48 hours that follow, the participants will disappear into the KinoLab, only to emerge from their creative ecstasy two days later and present the festival audience with the results.

If you thought these film enthusiasts had had enough, you were wrong. After the screening a new theme will be chosen and the madness will start all over again…

In all, the process consists of four 48 hours-rounds, the first two of which take place before the festival begins. The start will be Oct, 28th at 10 PM. The central idea behind this short film overload is to have an adrenalin-infused week of fun, inspiration and spontaneous improvisation. The project is non-competitive and open to all.

Screenings:

Sun, 30. Okt. 22.00 h - Kino ACUD
Tue, 01. Nov. 22.00 h - Kino ACUD
Thu, 03. Nov. 22.00 h - Kino ACUD

The KinoKabaret movement began in 1998 on a rainy December day in Montreál and now has followers everywhere, from St. Petersburg to Wisconsin, from Paris to Minnesota. KinoKabaret has toured the world and left an enthusiastic and inspired team of local filmmakers in its wake. There are now over 40 movie work groups worldwide, including in Hamburg and Berlin.

And now again, after the 21st International Short Film Festival interfilm Berlin, there will be a few more "Kinoites" who adopt the movement’s motto:

Do Well With Nothing, Do Better With Little, And Do It Right Now!
