About the Competition
Reflecting the world in all of its facets, the 25 films from 16 countries collected in this competition section were selected from 700 documentary entries. The filmmakers featured here reveal people in extreme situations; labour immigrants, a female war reporter on the streets of the Syrian city Aleppo, a gay hooligan or ramblers in a ghost town. At times ironically distant, at others emotional and participatory, the gaze is always exceptional regardless whether the films are animated, brightly coloured, poetic, black and white or classic. Despite the diversity of locations such as Syria, Cambodia, Cuba, Congo, New Zealand and Switzerland the stories are moving and not all of them are serious.
