IC - International Competition

7 Programs

About the Competition

7,000 entries from 135 countries! To make an objective selection of nominations for the International Competition is hardly an easy task. The result is a rhythmic and thematically harmonious programme that encompasses highly diverse films. 65 short films, 32 of which are animations, have made it, arranged in seven programmes, two of which are exclusively dedicated to animation. In addition to European productions, this year's collection presents international contributions from a total of 29 countries including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Israel, Japan, Morocco, New Zealand, Taiwan and the USA.

The International Competition reflects the global diversity of independent short film making content-wise and stylistically. Filmmakers' central focus is on themes such as family, love and growing up, the small and not-so-small catastrophes of every day life, outlandish forays into the worlds of fantasy and even animal protagonists are paid special attention this year. Whether they are told in ways that are tragic, hilarious or peculiar, it is the creativity of these short works that is most impressive.
